Southern Virginia, in the 1960’s was not the atypical place for a black woman to begin her own business. Yet Mary M. Jackson, affectionately known as “Ms. Mer”, did not let the era in which she was living affect her ambitions.
In 1967 Mrs. Jackson opened the Dew Drop Inn on Halifax Street in Emporia, VA, where she provided a legit and sanctioned place for folks in our community to come eat, drink, and fellowship with one another. While her eldest two sons went overseas to fight in the Vietnam War, and her husband being a transient construction worker that worked around the country, Ms. Mer was able to instill in her 4 daughters and her baby boy a great work ethic and compassion for their community, and they effectively pushed Dew Drop Inn to thrive in its hay day of the 70’s and 80’s.
A deeply religious and sympathetic woman, Mrs. Jackson never turned down a hungry soul. And if you couldn’t pay today, she would tell you to “bring it back when you get it”, providing credit to folks that needed to feed their families. With this business model, Ms. Mer was able to develop two additional businesses Reese Street Grocery and Washington Park Grocery. She managed these businesses until her retirement. Ms. Mer’s brand is not your typical brand, here, “We don’t do it to make a ton of money, we do it to provide a great product, with great value, to great folks”.
